What will be possible in 10 years’ time?

The Cloud – Artificial Intelligence – Virtual Reality – Internet of Things – …

What are the developments we get excited about? (The things we can’t wait to see / do / have…)

  • Microchip in your brain for access to information
  • to be able to interface with the internet of things
  • Space Exploration – going further than any man has ever before
  • Hoverboards and other stuff from Back to the Future (like the shoes)
  • smarter computers: Controlled by gestures (natural user interaction), voice control
  • Holograms like in Ironman and Star Wars: Augmented Reality
  • virtual reality – like with the Oculus Rift and the new Five: Being “somewhere else” (for work – virtual conferences)
  • Teleportation – is it theoretically possible? Practically?

What are we concerned about? (Who knows / controls what…? What will our lives be like? Consumers vs Creators)

  • Advanced weaponry and who is in control of it & malfunctions
  • Artificial Intelligence getting too intelligent, passing out humans and taking over. (Elon Musk, Steven Hawkins & their call for a ban on military artificial intelligence)
  • Malfunctioning AI robots
  • People might not want to use technology any more – technology that’s outdated (and might not be able to update)

Movies and television series that influence our understanding & thoughts:

  • Back to the Future (great gadgets)
  • iRobot (sentient robots imprisoning people in their houses)
  • Robocop
  • Star Trek
  • Star Wars
  • Interstellar
  • The Matrix
  • Doctor Who (although that’s more fantasy – as well as some SciFi)

Books:

  • Altered Carbon (“cortical stacks” in the neck hold person’s personality, memories etc.)
  • Hover Car Racer (transport etc.)

Themes:

Transport – Gaming – Medicine – Media – Robots – Drones – Wearable Technology – 3 D Printing….

What we explored on the first day

  • Ikea working with technological companies on a smart table: Put the ingredients e.g. for a pancake on it, and it shows you how much of each to add. “Smart Table”
  • Lasers are used in weaponry in new ways: US Navy are using them to burn holes in aircraft. Handheld laser guns (called phasers, funnily) can blind people temporarily.
  • Robots with AI can be creative, make music, do art, from learning what people like. The music sounds good even.
  • Virtual Reality: Oculus Rift and the Vive (Steam’s VR device) look pretty cool. You can now walk in a room and your movements can be tracked by two laser devices, which is a huge step forward.
  • Virtual Reality and Minecraft can come together. One player can get a birds-eye view or underground view on a world that other players are playing in on their PC or tablet. Fascinating.
  • There are virtual schools now: In Florida, there is a virtual Middle School and High School. It’s free if you are a Florida resident, but if you live elsewhere it’s $395 a class per semester. Out of the five people here, one would prefer online, two would prefer real life, and two are not sure.
